FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What kind of artwork do I need to send for production and estimates?
A. We work directly from digital art. We accept most picture formats including artwork. Adobe Photoshop and Corel Draw formats are the best for any logo or art. (i.e. .eps, .ai, and .cdr or any Vector art formats) General Picture formats include: jpegs or .jpg, bitmaps or .bmp, and gifs or .gif, etc. If you do not have your logo in digital form (on disk or cd), you should scan a letterhead or business card in color at the size you want it in 300dpi and e-mail it to us at steve@keyembroidery.com . If you need further assistance, please e-mail us or call us at (602) 595-7879.
Q. If I have or can get the digitized design from my current embroider, will I save the digitizing fee?
A. Yes. Sometimes there is a small fee if any to make small changes to the current design to work with our equipment and software if it is not the same. Send us the design and we will know before we start any work.
Q. How big can my logo be?
A. A typical left chest design is 3-4" wide. Designs embroidered on caps can be no more than 2 ¼" high and typically 5" wide and under, although we have gone a lot wider in some cases. Jacket backs, shirtfronts, banners, bags, etc can go up to16" X 16" per section. Once we receive your logo or artwork, we will call you with any specific questions regarding your design.
Q. What is the smallest lettering I can have in my design?
A. The smallest text we normally embroider with any accuracy is about 0.25" (6mm) high. We can make adjustments to your design to compensate for slight variations. Typically, a single line of text can only include about 20 characters and spaces before it requires the text to be split into two lines. Exceptions can be made for smaller text, but because of the extra time it takes in the digitizing and sew outs, we have to charge additional fees above the standard.
Q. What exactly is digitizing and how do you come up with a price?
A. Digitizing (sometimes called "punching" or a "tape") is the process where we convert each element of your logo into a series of stitches, placed in a specific sequence and pattern. All of these stitch patterns are combined together into a design that can be read and executed by a computer driven embroidery machine. It is very similar to a pentagram. Expert digitizing is critical to producing expert embroidery that looks and sews well, and is very detail oriented and time intensive. Simple designs with good artwork (i.e. eps, .ai, and .cdr or any Vector art formats) require less time (less expensive), to detailed logos and designs with poor artwork requiring more time (more expensive). This is a one-time fee for new orders to set up your design, and not charge on reorders.
Q. How many colors can I use?
A. You may use any amount of colors your design needs. Although, designs with more than 12 colors will incur an up-charge of $1.00 per color, per garment. It is very rare that a logo would go past 8 colors, since the average logos use between 4 and up to 7 colors. We do offer this service for those rare cases though.
Q. Do you monogram?
A. Yes we do. Personal names or initials can be embroidered on almost any garment or item. We can add a personalization in a script font or a block font. A typical monogram charge is $5 per unit unless quoted differently. This is a great gift idea for, but not limited to, robes and towels for weddings, anniversaries and birthdays.
Q. Can I have more than one design embroidered on the same item?
A. Yes. This is very common. You may want more than one design on your item. For instance, you may want your URL on the back of your caps or on the sleeve of your polo shirts. Because of the extra labor, extra hooping and backing used, we typically charge a small fee to cover our costs.
Q. Most common asked about fabric types.
A. Piqué [peeKAY] - A knitted fabric with a waffle, or diamond-shaped, pattern. French piqué knits became an international favorite when René Lacoste, a 1920's French tennis champion, designed the polo shirt. We recommend you choose a pique polo shirt for most uses. Although, it's usually a heavier fabric, its "meshy" knit provides a great deal of "breathability".
Jersey - A knitted fabric with a plain, flat surface on the outside and a textured surface inside. Tee shirts are the product usually associated with jersey knits, although lower-priced polo shirts are also fabricated from jersey knits. We recommend a jersey knit when price is the only constraint. Otherwise, we recommend you choose a pique or interlock polo shirt.
Interlock Knit - A fabric that has two plies knit simultaneously to form one thicker and heavier ply. It has more natural stretch than a jersey knit, a soft hand, and the same appearance and feel on both sides. We recommend interlock when you want a smooth surface and quality is more important than price.
Placket - The part of a shirt or jacket where the garment fastens together.
Polynosic - A fabric derived from rayon, that features similar characteristics to cotton and silk, has excellent luster and very little shrinkage.
Jacquard Knit - A pattern knit directly into the fabric during the manufacturing process. Typically, 2 or more colors are used.
Tubular Construction - A method of knitting that yields fabric in a tubular configuration which is cut into sections that form the body of a shirt without side seams. Tee shirts are generally constructed using this method as are some value priced polo shirts.
Microfiber - This fabric is tightly woven from a very fine poly thread and has a sueded finish for a luxurious, soft feel. Microfiber fabric is naturally water repellent due to its construction process and when specially treated, can also be waterproof.

Q. Can you supply us with an embroidered sample?
A. Yes. If you have a design or logo digitized, we will send you a .jpg or .bmp of what the actual embroidery will look like, or send a printout on paper faxed or mailed at no charge. Although the picture will not be as beautiful as the actual embroidery and the colors will very somewhat form graphics card, not to forget the colors of printer inc. But, if you need to have an actual sample, we will embroider it for a refundable fee of $20.00 - $150.00 per design, depending on the complexity of the design. Because it takes the same work needed to produce the actual product, we have the same labor and costs involved. The nice part is, when we receive an order exceeding that amount, the sample price will be applied to your order for that item. This does not exclude the one time setup/digitizing fee. It is the actual embroidery you will have when sewn on your item. Attach you logo or design with your e-mail and send it to steve@keyembroidery.com and we'll give you an estimate.
